Appeal For Pardon
i
Here I linger in this gray box,
in this gray box with lots of locks,
lots of gray locks with lots of keys ---
open them all now if you please?
Pretty please with sugar on it,
sugar, maple and Blue Bonnet;
send it unto the Governor
wrapped up all neat with words of lore:
ii
Tell him it would seem unfair
so many persons in his care
shall live a life expecting not
but getting three squares and a cot,
a pot to piss and drop a deuce,
a sink to gargle, spit the loose
piece of foul meat left from the meal,
the rotting apple, core and peel.
iii
Without a goal to this duress ---
''re-entry, bridge to (our) success'',
'tis pointless and exceeding cru'l
we shan't be giv'n from life's hard school
diploma showing that we've learned
our lesson, and that we have burned
the bridges from our past offense:
''Let us erect that picket fence!''
iv
Will you now give us but a chance,
or won't you pay a second glance?
Be real, good sir, 'tis in your hand
to demagogue or take a stand!
Will these, your brethren, kindred, live
with hope anew, a hope you give?
Or will you deal us cannily,
turning deaf ear now to our plea?
v
I hope I have your conscience stirred
so at the end by His Good Word,
when souls are charged to give account,
God will to you this fine deed count!
And unto you, absent all strife,
absent sorrow, eternal life ---
your pardon, earned for Jesus' sake,
hell's prison voids; your freedom take!
