PREAMBLE

WHEREAS, God warns me about my enemy the devil, that he "does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him," and that, "Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies,"

WHEREAS, God warns me about my enemy the world, saying that I "live in the midst of deception; in their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me,"

WHEREAS, God warns me about my enemy the sinful flesh, saying "Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise," 

WHEREAS, God asks of those who think they are wise in this age, "Who is this that darkens my counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me.  Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.  Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?  On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?"

WHEREAS, God promises me, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle,"

WHEREAS, God promises me, "[His] word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path,"

WHEREAS, God promises me, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I will "Let God be true, but every man a liar," and it is further RESOLVED that "[I] shall not make for [myself] a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth," and be it further RESOLVED that in so doing I anticipate that God will "open [my] eyes, so that [I] may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that [I] may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in [Him]."

I. THE HEAVENS

1.  In the beginning, God created the heavens.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

2.  There are three heavens: the sanctuary of God, the firmament, and the sky.

Romans 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 

3.  Psalm 150 indicates the three heavens as 1) God's sanctuary, 2) the firmament, and 3) the sky.

Praise the Lord!

Praise God in his sanctuary;

    praise him in his mighty heavens!

Praise him for his mighty deeds;

    praise him according to his excellent greatness!

Praise him with trumpet sound;

    praise him with lute and harp!

Praise him with tambourine and dance;

    praise him with strings and pipe!

Praise him with sounding cymbals;

    praise him with loud clashing cymbals!

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord!

4.  God dwells in heaven above the firmament.

Job 22:12 “Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are!

Amos 9:6 Who builds his upper chambers in the heavens and founds his vault upon the earth; who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the surface of the earth— the Lord is his name.

5.  Angels dwell with God in heaven.

Revelation 4:6 And before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind:

6.  God walks on the circuit of heaven and thick clouds veil him.

Job 22:14 Thick clouds veil him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the vault of heaven.’

7.  Heaven is a paradise.

8.  God's sapphire thrown is in heaven and sits upon the firmament.

Isaiah 40:21-22 Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;

Isaiah 66:1 Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest?

Ezekiel 10:1 Then I looked, and behold, on the expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim there appeared above them something like a sapphire, in appearance like a throne.

9.  There are many thrones in heaven for those given authority to judge.

Revelation 20:4a Then I saw thrones, and those who were sitting on them were given the authority to judge.

10. The temple of God is in heaven.

Revelation 11:1-2  Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.

Revelation 15:5 After this I looked, and the sanctuary of the tent of witness in heaven was opened, 

11. The ark of God's covenant is in this temple.

Revelation 11:19 Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail.

12. There are seven gold lampstands.

Revelation 2:1 The one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven gold lampstands, says this:

Revelation 8:2 And I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and to them were given seven trumpets.

Revelation 16:1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, "Go and pour out the bowls of the wrath of God on the earth."

15. There is a gold altar.

Revelation 6:9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne.

From the throne came flashes of lightning, and rumblings and peals of thunder, and before the throne were burning seven torches of fire, which are the seven spirits of God, and before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind: the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight. And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,

    who was and is and is to come!”

And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, he twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,

    to receive glory and honor and power,

for you created all things,

    and by your will they existed and were created.”

17. The souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus are under the altar in heaven. 

Revelation 20:4b And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony about Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshipped the beast and his image, and they did not receive his mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

Revelation 6:9-11 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne. They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long before you will judge and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”  Then they were each given a white robe and told to rest a little longer, until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

18. God directs the waters of the sea from his upper chambers in heaven.

Job 37:3 Under the whole heaven he lets it go, and his lightning to the corners of the earth.

20. The heavens declare the glory of God and proclaim his handiwork.

Romans 1:20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

Psalm 19:1 To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

21. The heavens pour forth speech and reveal knowledge.

Psalm 19:2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.

22. The heavens speak in a universally understood language that goes out to the ends of the earth.

Psalm 19:3-4 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

23. The heavens speak God's wrath against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.

Romans 1:18-19 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.

24. The heavens wait in eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

Romans 8:19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

25. The heavens were unwillingly subjected to futility.

26. The heavens will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of God's children.

27. God forbids us from worshiping the heavens.

Deuteronomy 4:19 And beware lest you raise your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and bow down to them and serve them, things that the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven.

28. God forbids us from making images or likenesses of anything in the heavens above.

Exodus 20:4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Deuteronomy 5:8 “‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

II. THE FIRMAMENT

1.  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

2.  God made the firmament on the second day.

Genesis 1:6-8 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

3.  There are waters above the firmament.

Genesis 1:6-8 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

Psalm 148:4 Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!

4.  The firmament is stretched out like a curtain that is spread out like a tent to dwell in.

Isaiah 48:13 My hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand forth together.

Isaiah 45:12 I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host.

Isaiah 44:24 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself,

Job 9:8 Who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea;

Isaiah 42:5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it:

Psalm 104:2 Covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.

5.  The firmament is hard as a cast metal mirror, like awe-inspiring crystal.

Job 37:18 Can you, like him, spread out the skies, hard as a cast metal mirror?

Ezekiel 1:22 Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads.

Revelation 4:6 And before the throne there was as it were a sea of glass, like crystal. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, full of eyes in front and behind:

2 Samuel 22:8 “Then the earth reeled and rocked; the foundations of the heavens trembled and quaked, because he was angry.

7.  There are windows in the firmament holding back the waters above.

Genesis 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep burst forth, and the windows of the heavens were opened.

Genesis 8:2 The fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens was restrained,

Isaiah 24:18 He who flees at the sound of the terror shall fall into the pit, and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.

Malachi 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

8.  There is a door in the firmament through which John went in the Spirit to the heavens above.

And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.

9.  God made the lights which he set in the firmament on the fourth day.

Psalm 136:7 To him who made the great lights, for his steadfast love endures forever;

Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

20. God is capable of stopping, reversing, and maintaining the rotation of the lights in the sky.

Joshua 10:13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in the midst of heaven and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.

Habakkuk 3:11 The sun and moon stood still in their place at the light of your arrows as they sped, at the flash of your glittering spear.

Isaiah 38:8 Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun on the dial of Ahaz turn back ten steps.” So the sun turned back on the dial the ten steps by which it had declined.

Joshua 10:12 At that time Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord gave the Amorites over to the sons of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, “Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and moon, in the Valley of Aijalon.”

21. The stars, like the angels, sing for joy to God.

Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

The seven stars John saw in the Living One's right hand are messengers of the seven churches.

Revelation 1:20 “The mystery of the seven stars, which you saw in my right hand, and the seven gold lampstands is this: The seven stars are the messengers of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.”

22. God used a star to mark the birth of His Son Jesus.

Matthew 2:1-2 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men[a] from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose[b] and have come to worship him.”  When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.  They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:

“‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

    are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

for from you shall come a ruler

    who will shepherd my people Israel.’”

Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.  And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”  After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.  When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.  And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.  And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

III. THE SKY

1.  The sky is the region of air above the dry ground God made on the third day.

Genesis 1:9-10 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 

2.  God made birds to dwell in the sky on the fifth day.

Genesis 1:20-23 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 

3.  There are cherubim in the sky below the firmament.

Ezekiel 1:22-26 Over the heads of the living creatures there was the likeness of an expanse, shining like awe-inspiring crystal, spread out above their heads. And under the expanse their wings were stretched out straight, one toward another. And each creature had two wings covering its body. And when they went, I heard the sound of their wings like the sound of many waters, like the sound of the Almighty, a sound of tumult like the sound of an army. When they stood still, they let down their wings. And there came a voice from above the expanse over their heads. When they stood still, they let down their wings. And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance.

4.  Four angels stand in the four corners holding back the winds of the earth.

Revelation 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree.

Matthew 24:31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

5.  God set His rainbow in the sky to remind us of his promise to Noah.

Genesis 8:12-17 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

IV. THE EARTH

1.  God made the heaven and earth system on the first day.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

2.  The earth system is God's footstool.

Isaiah 66:1 Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest?

3.  God made the region of dry ground within the earth system on the third day.

Genesis 1:9-10 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

4.  God's purpose for the earth is that it be inhabited.

Isaiah 45:18 For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (he is God!), who formed the earth and made it (he established it; he did not create it empty, he formed it to be inhabited!): “I am the Lord, and there is no other.

5.  God filled the earth with vegetation on the fourth day.

Genesis 1:11-13 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day. 

6.  God filled the waters and air around the earth with fish and birds on the fifth day.

Genesis 1:20-23 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. 7.  God filled the earth with animals on the sixth day.

Genesis 1:24-25 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 

8.  God filled the earth with humans on the sixth day.

Genesis 1:26-27 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

9.  God has given humans dominion over all living things and has commanded them to be fruitful and multiply and fill earth and subdue it.

Genesis 1:28-31 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. 

10. The inhabitable surface of the earth is a circle inscribed on the face of the waters.

Proverbs 8:27 When he established the heavens, I was there; when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,

Job 26:10 He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.

Isaiah 40:21-22 Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;

11. Isaiah knew the difference between “circle” and “ball”.

Isaiah 22:18 and whirl you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a wide land. There you shall die, and there shall be your glorious chariots, you shame of your master's house.

12. God spread out the surface of the earth.

Isaiah 42:5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it:

Psalm 136:6 To him who spread out the earth above the waters, for his steadfast love endures forever;

Isaiah 44:24 Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: “I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself,

13. The inhabitable surface of the earth is observably flat.

Job 38:14 the earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its features stand out like those of a garment.

Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

Luke 4:5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time,

Job 28:24 For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

Revelation 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

Daniel 4:11 The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth.

Proverbs 30:4 Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Surely you know!

Psalm 19:4-6 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Jeremiah 16:19 O Lord, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say: “Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, worthless things in which there is no profit.

Psalm 98:3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Isaiah 45:22 “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

Jeremiah 51:16 When he utters his voice there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.

Psalm 67:7 God shall bless us; let all the ends of the earth fear him!

Deuteronomy 28:64 “And the Lord will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known.

Psalm 19:4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,

1 Samuel 2:10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the power of his anointed.”

15. The end of the inhabitable surface of the earth is at the boundary between light and darkness.

Job 26:10 He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness.

16. The earth system has four corners.

Revelation 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds of the earth, that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree.

Isaiah 11:12 He will raise a signal for the nations and will assemble the banished of Israel, and gather the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Job 37:3 Under the whole heaven he lets it go, and his lightning to the corners of the earth.

Revelation 20:8 And will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea.

17. The earth hangs on nothing.

Job 26:7 He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing.

18. The earth sits on pillars.

1 Samuel 2:8 He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world.

Psalm 75:3 When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars.

Job 9:6 Who shakes the earth out of its place, and its pillars tremble;

19. The earth is firmly set on its foundations and will never be moved until the Last Day.

Psalm 104:5 He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved.

Psalm 93:1 The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.

1 Chronicles 16:30 Tremble before him, all the earth; yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.

Isaiah 48:13 My hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand forth together.

Psalm 96:10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.”

Psalm 102:25 Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.

2 Samuel 22:16 Then the channels of the sea were seen; the foundations of the world were laid bare, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.

20. The pillars are known to tremble and will topple on the Last Day.

Isaiah 13:13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken out of its place, at the wrath of the Lord of hosts in the day of his fierce anger.

21. The earth declares God's eternal power and divine nature.

Romans 1:20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

22. If we do not praise God, the very stones will cry out.

Luke 19:37-40  As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”  And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

23. God cursed the earth when Adam fell.

Genesis 3:17-19 And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you;   in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;  and you shall eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your face    you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust,  and to dust you shall return.”

24. God sent a worldwide flood upon the earth during the time of Noah.

Genesis 6:5-9 The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. 

25. God sent His Son to the earth to redeem the world.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  

26. The earth waits in eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

Romans 8:19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.

Romans 8:22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

27. The earth was unwillingly subjected to futility.

Romans 8:20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope

28. The earth will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of God's children.

Romans 8:21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

29. God promises to maintain the earth until the Last Day.

Genesis 8:21-22 The Lord smelled the pleasant aroma. The Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the soil anymore because of man, for the thoughts he forms in his heart are evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike every living thing, as I have done. While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”

Matthew 5:45 For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

30. God forbids us from making images or likenesses of anything in the earth.

Exodus 20:4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

Deuteronomy 5:8 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

V. THE PIT

1.  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

2.  There is land below the roots of the mountains described as a pit.

Jonah 2:6 At the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God.

Isaiah 7:11 “Ask for a sign from the Lord your God. Ask for it either in the depths below or in the heights above.”

3.  The pit is in deep darkness.

Job 10:21-22 before I go—and I shall not return—to the land of darkness and deep shadow, the land of gloom like thick darkness, like deep shadow without any order, where light is as thick darkness.”

4.  The pit is described as bottomless in Revelation.

Revelation 11:7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, 

5.  There are creatures who dwell in this pit.

Revelation 5:13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

Revelation 11:7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them, 

6.  The pit marks the point at the greatest possible distance from heaven.

Proverbs 9:18 But he does not know that the dead are there, that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

Isaiah 57:9 You journeyed to the king with oil and multiplied your perfumes; you sent your envoys far off, and sent down even to Sheol.

Job 11:8 It is higher than heaven—what can you do? Deeper than Sheol—what can you know?

Amos 9:2 “If they dig into Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.

Psalm 139:8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

7.  The dead descend or are made to go down into it.

Ezekiel 31:14 All this happened so that all the well-watered trees would never again reach such heights or stretch their tops up between the clouds. Nor will the tallest of them remain standing—even though they drink in water—because they have all been handed over to death, to be below the earth, along with all mankind, with those who have descended to the pit.

Psalm 86:13 For great is your mercy toward me, and you have delivered my soul from “the lowest hell.”

Psalm 88:6 You have put me in the lowest pit, in dark places, in the depths.

Lamentations 3:55 I called on your name, Lord, from the deepest pit.

Ezekiel 26:20 then I will bring you down to be with those who have descended to the pit, to the people from ancient times. I will make you live below the earth, like ancient ruins. You will be with those who have descended to the pit, so that you will be uninhabited, and I will not give you glory in the land of the living.

8.  The revived ascend or are brought and lifted up from it.

1 Samuel 2:6 The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

Job 7:9 As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up;

Psalm 3:4 I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill. 

Psalm 55:16 But I call to God, and the Lord will save me.

9.  Sometimes the living are thrown into the pit before they would naturally have been claimed by it, in which cases the pit is described as "opening its mouth" and "swallowing them alive."

Proverbs 1:12 like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit;

Numbers 16:30 But if the Lord creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into Sheol, then you shall know that these men have despised the Lord.”

Numbers 16:33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.

Psalm 55:16 But I call to God, and the Lord will save me.

10. The pit has gates.

Job 17:16 Will it go down to the bars of Sheol? Shall we descend together into the dust?”

Job 38:17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you, or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?

Isaiah 38:10 I said, In the middle of my days I must depart; I am consigned to the gates of Sheol for the rest of my years.

Psalm 9:13 Be gracious to me, O Lord! See my affliction from those who hate me, O you who lift me up from the gates of death,

11. The pit is divided into compartments with “farthest corners” and “uttermost parts of the pit”.

Proverbs 7:27 Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

Isaiah 14:15 But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit.

Ezekiel 32:23 whose graves are set in the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, who spread terror in the land of the living.

12. Here the dead meet without distinction—the rich and the poor, the pious and the wicked, the old and the young, the master and the slave.

Job 30:23 For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living.

13. The dead continue after a fashion their earthly life.

14. Jacob would mourn there.

Genesis 42:38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

15. David would abide there in peace.

I Kings 2:6 Act therefore according to your wisdom, but do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in peace.

16. The warriors have their weapons with them, yet they are mere shadows and men without strength.

Ezekiel 32:27 And they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living.

Isaiah 14:9 Sheol beneath is stirred up to meet you when you come; it rouses the shades to greet you, all who were leaders of the earth; it raises from their thrones all who were kings of the nations.

Isaiah 26:14 They are dead, they will not live; they are shades, they will not arise; to that end you have visited them with destruction and wiped out all remembrance of them.

Psalm 88:5 like one set loose among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, like those whom you remember no more, for they are cut off from your hand.

17. The dead merely exist without knowledge or feeling.

Job 14:13 Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would conceal me until your wrath be past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

18. The pit is a silent place where no one praises God.

Psalm 94:17 If the Lord had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.

Psalm 115:17 The dead do not praise the Lord, nor do any who go down into silence.

19. Those who are in the pit spend most of their time sleeping.

Jeremiah 51:39 While they are inflamed I will prepare them a feast and make them drunk, that they may become merry, then sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake, declares the Lord.

Isaiah 26:14 They are dead, they will not live; they are shades, they will not arise; to that end you have visited them with destruction and wiped out all remembrance of them.

Job 14:12 so a man lies down and rises not again; till the heavens are no more he will not awake or be roused out of his sleep.

20. On certain occasions the dwellers in the pit are stirred up in order to mock the kings of the earth as they enter in.

Isaiah 14:9-11 Sheol beneath is stirred up to meet you when you come; it rouses the shades to greet you, all who were leaders of the earth; it raises from their thrones all who were kings of the nations. All of them will answer and say to you: "You too have become as weak as we! You have become like us! Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, the sound of your harps; maggots are laid as a bed beneath you, and worms are your covers."

21. The pit is a horrible, dreary, dark, disorderly land yet it is the appointed house for all the living.

Job 10:21-22 before I go—and I shall not return—to the land of darkness and deep shadow, the land of gloom like thick darkness, like deep shadow without any order, where light is as thick darkness.”

Job 30:23 For I know that you will bring me to death and to the house appointed for all living.

22. The pit is "dust".

Genesis 3:19 By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return. 

Ecclesiastes 3:20 All go to one place. All are from the dust, and to dust all return. 

Job 17:16 Will it go down to the bars of Sheol? Shall we descend together into the dust?”

23. No one who has entered the pit can return from it until the Last Day.

2 Samuel 12:23 But now he is dead. Why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.”

Job 7:9-10 As the cloud fades and vanishes, so he who goes down to Sheol does not come up; he returns no more to his house, nor does his place know him anymore.

Job 10:21 before I go—and I shall not return—to the land of darkness and deep shadow,

Job 16:22 For when a few years have come I shall go the way from which I shall not return.

24. Jesus descended into the pit after his death on the cross and proclaimed to the spirits in prison.

1 Peter 3:18-19 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.  

25. God will raise all the dead who are in the pit and they will stand before him on the Last Day.

Job 19:25-26 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.  And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, 

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

26. God will awake those who sleep in the pit, some to everlasting life, and some to everlasting contempt.

Daniel 12:2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Psalms 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 

John 6:54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

Job 19:25-26 For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth.  And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God,

VI. THE DEEP

1.  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

2.  God filled the waters in the seas with creatures on the fourth day.

Genesis 1:20-23 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day. 

3.  The deep is the waters under the earth.

Exodus 20:4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

4.  God spread out the inhabitable surface of the earth above the waters of the deep.

VII. THE LAKE OF FIRE

1.  The Devil and his angels, the beast, the false prophets, the fearful, the unbelieving, the abominable, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, the liars, as well as Death and the Grave will be thrown into the lake of fire for eternal torment.
