JOB 1:1-22
F 1 In the land of Uz there lived a man
E whose name was Job. This man was
E-F blameless and upright; he feared God
--- and shunned evil.
D-G 2 He had seven sons and three
daughters,
3 and he owned seven thousand sheep,
three thousand camels, five hundred
yoke of oxen and five hundred donkeys,
and had a large number of servants. He
A-B was the greatest man among all the
people of the East.
L-TH 4 His sons used to take turns holding
I-Z feasts in their homes, and they would
I-TH invite their three sisters to eat and drink
L with them.
I-TH-L 5 When a period of feasting had run its
C-N-M course, Job would send and have them
M-O-S purified. Early in the morning he would
P sacrifice a burnt offering for each of
TS them, thinking, "Perhaps my children
R have sinned and cursed God in their
Q-SS-T hearts." This was Job's regular custom.
---F-E 6 One day the angels came to present
themselves before the Lord , and Satan
also came with them.
---F-E 7 The Lord said to Satan, "Where have
you come from?" Satan answered the
D Lord , "From roaming through the earth
G and going back and forth in it."
--- 8 Then the Lord said to Satan, "Have you
B considered my servant Job? There is no
A one on earth like him; he is blameless
Z and upright, a man who fears God and
H shuns evil."
TH 9 "Does Job fear God for nothing?" Satan
replied.
H 10 "Have you not put a hedge around him
H and his household and everything he
Z has? You have blessed the work of his
A-B hands, so that his flocks and herds are
G-D spread throughout the land.
Z 11 But stretch out your hand and strike
H everything he has, and he will surely
I curse you to your face."
---E-F 12 The Lord said to Satan, "Very well,
A-B-G-D then, everything he has is in your hands,
E but on the man himself do not lay a
F finger." Then Satan went out from the
--- presence of the Lord .
TH-L 13 One day when Job's sons and
I-TH-L daughters were feasting and drinking
TH-H-L wine at the oldest brother's house,
P 14 a messenger came to Job and said,
A-B "The oxen were plowing and the
G-D donkeys were grazing nearby,
---F-E 15 and the Sabeans attacked and carried
D-G them off. They put the servants to the
B sword, and I am the only one who has
A escaped to tell you!"
--- 16 While he was still speaking, another
Z messenger came and said, "The fire of
H God fell from the sky and burned up the
I-TH sheep and the servants, and I am the
L only one who has escaped to tell you!"
--- 17 While he was still speaking, another
L messenger came and said, "The
C Chaldeans formed three raiding parties
N and swept down on your camels and
M-N carried them off. They put the servants
C to the sword, and I am the only one who
L has escaped to tell you!"
--- 18 While he was still speaking, yet
L another messenger came and said,
I-TH-L "Your sons and daughters were feasting
O and drinking wine at the oldest brother's
S house,
S 19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in
P from the desert and struck the four
TS corners of the house. It collapsed on
R them and they are dead, and I am the
Q-SS-T only one who has escaped to tell you!"
R-P-TS 20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe
Q and shaved his head. Then he fell to the
SS ground in worship
F 21 and said: "Naked I came from my
T mother's womb, and naked I will depart.
F-T The Lord gave and the Lord has taken
--- away; may the name of the Lord be
--- praised."
--- 22 In all this, Job did not sin by charging
--- God with wrongdoing.
